Submissions: Should prisoners be able to vote?

Submissions are now open for the Electoral (Disqualification of Convicted Prisoners) Amendment Bill.

Currently a person in jail can vote in an election if they are serving a term of less than three years.

This bill proposes to remove the right to vote for all prisoners.

These people have to come out of jail at some point - shouldn't we be trying to encourage them to remain connected to society, not further isolate them from it?

I cannot understand the reasoning behind why prisoners wouldn't be allowed to vote, apart from another arbitrary punishment perhaps. The only difference between them and many other people in society is that they got caught.
